March Update:

It is March Madness time for all you basketball fans.  For the ladies of the LWML, it is the month we call Mite Madness!  Be especially conscious of dropping any loose change into your Mite Box. (If you need one, please take it from one of the tables in the narthex.)  These mites (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and even folding money) add up mightily and – when combined with LCMS congregations from all over the country – are put to good use supporting missions in the US and around the world.  As our Mites Chair, Judy Fowler, explained at a recent service, this is a great time for parents to teach their children about the value of contributing what they can to help people in need.   Each Sunday in March, members of LWML will be at the altar during communion to accept the mite boxes. On March 3rd, the women will bring them forward; on March 10th, the men; on March 17th, the children; and on March 24th, anyone.  Last year, we raised over $900 in this one month and would like to beat that record in 2019.   Our General Meeting, held between services on February 10th saw 23 women in attendance.  We heard from Polly Bleeker who heads up the Helping Hands Ministry here at Holy Cross.  A number of new women signed up to be contacted whenever Polly is made aware of a need. This could be for meals for the family of a member who is ill or recovering from an accident or for transportation to a medical appointment.  When the need arises, Polly sends out an email that includes a schedule so that people can sign up to help if/when they can.   If anyone wants to be of service in this way, please contact Polly at to sign up.   Our next General Meeting will be held after late service on April 14th.  Our speaker will be Vicky Curry of iChoose Pregnancy Center, a mission which Holy Cross supports.  We’ll also be discussing plans for the upcoming Retreat.   Speaking of the Retreat, it is not too late to sign up, but slots are filling fast for this May 17-19 event. Word has spread that this weekend away at the beach at Oak Island is a wonderful time of spiritual growth, fun and fellowship. Whether you are new to Holy Cross or have been a member for many years, this has proven to be a great way to develop and strengthen relationships with our Sisters in Christ.  Just sign up on the bulletin board by the library, fill out and return a registration form and put that form and a check for the first half deposit ($65) in the lucite box. The second half payment is due by May 1st. If the cost is an issue, there will be scholarship application forms on the table by the library by March 10th that will help defray the cost.  We’d love to have both houses full (which would be 36 ladies), so pray about it and ask any board members or Retreat Coordinator Debbie Fick if you have any questions.   Think Spring!
